Hello and welcome to the Beta Beta Chapter of Delta Gamma at the University of Alberta! My name is Sanam and I currently hold the position of chapter president. Delta Gamma is more than a student group, it is our friends, family and home. We can't wait to share with you what makes Delta Gamma so special.
Delta Gamma was founded in 1873 in Oxford, Mississippi, by three young women at the Lewis School for Girls. These women founded an organization that today has 152 collegiate chapters, over 200 alumnae groups, and more than 245 000 members worldwide.
The members of Beta Beta follow in our founders footsteps and strive to uphold high ideals of friendship, educational and cultural interests, a true sense of social responsibility and developing the best qualities of character.
Our international philanthropy is Service for Sight. Beta Beta is proud to support this mission through various fundraising events that in turn assist the blind and visually impaired. Over the past 30+ years, our chapter has had the opportunity to host one of the longest- running philanthropy events at the University of Alberta: Anchor Splash. This week long event boasts many fun competitions and fundraising opportunities and is one of our chapter’s favourite events. Other philanthropic events hosted by our chapter include Desserts with DG – an opportunity for guests to tour our local chapter house and learn about the visually impaired while indulging themselves in an endless dessert buffet – and Anchor Splash – a week-long event concluding in a pool day that boasts raft races and synchronized swimming routines. Each of these events provide our members and others with an opportunity to “Do Good” which has been the motto of our Fraternity since its inception. The proceeds of our events go directly to the Delta Gamma Foundation and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
Additionally, our chapter offers numerous opportunities for enriched scholasticism, leadership, and service. Our members contribute service hours to the Strathcona Senior Center, the CNIB, and our Canadian Veterans. Delta Gamma encourages members to pursue their diverse interests and participate in a variety of student groups, sporting events, and cultural programming. These experiences offer unique skill sets to our members and prove to be invaluable to our organization. Lastly, we see academic achievement as a priority, and our chapter strives to offer support and recognition for the scholastic success of our members.
Delta Gamma is more than just a collegiate experience. It is an organization that provides enduring support and opportunity to its members. Membership in Delta Gamma marks the beginning of a lifetime of friendship and we welcome you aboard!
